Rosenthal: Phillies, Giants Going After Pagan

The Phillies pursuit of B.J. Upton failed when he signed a five-year, $75.25 million deal with the Atlanta Braves.

But the Phillies pursuit of a starting centerfielder is far from over. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports that the Phillies are interested in free agent Angle Pagan, having offered him a four-year deal.

The Phillies aren’t alone. Pagan’s former club, World Champion San Francisco, has also offered Pagan a four-year deal.

Rosenthal writes:

Pagan’s injury history concerns Phillies officials, sources say — he has played in more than 123 games only twice in his career, including last season when he appeared in a career-high 154.

His speed, athleticism and offensive ability, however, are all enticing.

Pagan last season batted .288 with a .778 OPS and stole 29 bases in 36 attempts. His numbers out of the leadoff spot — a .290 batting average and .829 OPS in 338 at-bats — were even better.

Zolecki: Reports Indicate Braves Sign B.J. Upton

In a tweet by Todd Zolecki, “Numerous reports B.J. Upton has agreed to a five-year deal with Braves.”

The Braves were said to be in the running for Upton, who the Phillies and a mystery team were interested in as well. Reports say that Upton will receive between $14-15 million per year.

For those hoping to land Upton, the Phillies will have to look elsewhere for their centerfielder. Michael Bourn and Josh Hamilton are still on the board, but both will ask for more money than Upton.

Phillies In the Running for B.J. Upton

The Phillies are one of three teams that will most likely land free agent outfielder B.J. Upton.

According to Jim Bowden of ESPN, the Phillies and Atlanta Braves are the top two candidates to land Upton, with a mystery team also involved. The mystery team could be either Cincinnati or Washington.

The Braves are said to have a slight edge on the Phillies, with the final offers being issued this week. Where Upton will land could be determined in that time.

Phillies GM Amaro Discusses Ideal Center Fielder

The Phillies are in need of a new center fielder, and general manager Ruben Amaro is going to target the free agent market for one.

Shane Victorino was traded to the Dodgers at the deadline and John Mayberry Jr isn’t viewed as an everyday center fielder. That leaves Amaro looking for a fresh face, and preferably a right-handed hitting one at that.

“If we can get someone who would give us more balance from the right side, that would be great,” Amaro said. “That’s not necessary, but it would be helpful. We need somebody who can be a plus defender. Defense and pitching is going to win. As always, we saw it again in these playoffs, San Francisco were champions because they caught it and pitched it. Yes, I’d like to add to our offense. But we absolutely have to catch it and pitch it. We can’t lose sight of that as the basis of how we’ll be successful.”

That spells out free agent center fielder B.J. Upton. Upton is an ideal fit, mainly because Upton does a lot offensively and could provide the Phillies with some pop from the right side of the plate.

Either way, the Phillies need to improve in that department big time, and a lot of pressure is on Amaro to do just that.
