Phillies Avoid Arbitration; Sign Bastardo

The Phillies have avoided arbitration with left-handed reliever Antonio Bastardo.

The Phillies signed the 27-year-old reliever to a one-year, $1.4 million contract. The deal includes bonus incentives.

Last year, Bastardo went 2-5 with a 4.33 ERA, striking out 81 batters in only 52 innings.

This Sucks: Bastardo Implodes In 8th; Lose 5-0

Mets 5, Phillies 0
WP – Tim Hudson (7-4, 3.56)
LP – Antonio Bastardo (2-3, 5.34)

PHILADELPHIA — The above tweet says it all.

The Phillies of 2012 are finding newer and more awesome ways to lose baseball games. This time, Antonio Bastardo imploded in the 8th inning, walking in the go-ahead run before giving up a grand slam to Brian McCann in the Braves 5-0 win over the Phillies Friday night.

The monumental meltdown overshadowed the return of Ryan Howard, who went 2-for-4 with a single and double in the Phillies loss.

Howard received a chorus of cheers in the 2nd inning. On the second pitch he faced, he took Braves starter Tim Hudson deep to right-center field for a lead-off double. But in 2012 Phillies fashion, Howard was stranded at second.

Along with Howard’s return, Kyle Kendrick’s seven shut out innings were spoiled thanks to the bull pen’s inability to keep the Phillies in the game. Kendrick scattered four hits and a walk through seven, striking out five.

Pena’s 8th Inning Homer Overshadows Pitcher’s Duel

Rays 3, Phillies 2
WP – David Price (10-4, 2.95)
LP – Antonio Bastardo (2-2, 3.75)
SV – Fernando Rodney (21)

PHILADELPHIA — The game was living up to it’s billing.

Cole Hamels and David Price were dueling in a 1-0 game through seven innings. Hamels pitched seven shutout innings in his start, holding a slight advantage over Price by putting his team in the best position to win.

With both pitchers throwing 223 pitches combined, they gave way to their bullpens after seven. There, the Rays won the important battle in their 3-2 win over the Phils.

A gassed Antonio Bastardo, who threw 29 pitches yesterday, struggled in the 8th inning, costing Hamels a shot at his 11th win of the season. Bastardo walked two hitters before giving up a one-out three-run homer to the left-handed hitting Carlos Pena to give the Rays a 3-1 lead.
