Quintero Heads List of Nine Non-Roster Spring Training Invitees for Phillies

The Phillies invited nine non-40-man roster players to Spring Training this season.

The list is headed by free agent catcher Humberto Quintero, who is the top candidate to back-up Erik Kratz while Carlos Ruiz serves his 25-game suspension. Quintero will compete with prospects Tommy Joseph and Sebastian Valle for that spot.

Quintero, 33, hit .232 in 43 games with the Kansas City Royals last season.

The other eight guys invited to Spring Training areĀ infielders Andres Blanco, Josh Fields, Michael Martinez and Pete Orr; catcher Steven Lerud; outfielder Jermaine Mitchell; pitchers Cesar Jimenez and Zach Miner.

Martinez, Orr and Lerud all played with the Phillies during the 2012 season while Blanco spent all of last year with the IronPigs in Triple-A. The rest have not been invited before.

As per the Phillies PR, here is information on the other eight invitees to Spring Training:

Roster Moves: RP Brummett Claimed By Blue Jays; Orr, Lerud Outrighted

The Phillies shook up their roster a bit today, making some room on their 40-man roster.

Starting with pitching, reliever Tyson Brummett was put on waivers and claimed by the Toronto Blue Jays. Brummett, 28, made his Major League debut in September, allowing a pair of hits and striking out two in his only appearance of the season.

The Phillies also outrighted infielder Pete Orr and catcher Steven Lerud from their 40-man roster, leaving the Phillies with 37 players and four players on the 60-day DL.

Orr, 33, spent the last two years with the Phillies and Triple-A affiliate Lehigh Valley. With the Phillies he hit .253 with nine of his 38 hits being extra-base hits.

Lerud, 28, played almost the entire season with Double-A Reading. Lerud did get 10 at-bats with the Phillies, notching a pair of singles.

LP – Johnny Cueto (18-6, 2.58)
SV – Phillippe Aumont (1)

CINCINNATI — It was an afternoon of firsts for a pair of young Phillies right-handers.

Tyler Cloyd never would have guessed his first Major League win would come on the road against the best team in the National League while being opposed by a Cy Young candidate.

But Cloyd did it anyway, besting the Reds offense and Johnny Cueto on a cloudy Monday afternoon in Cincinnati. Then Phillippe Aumont came in to pitch the 9th, earning Cloyd his first Major League win to go along with Aumont’s first Major League save in the Phillies 4-2 win over the Reds.

Cloyd settled down nicely after allowing a 2nd-inning solo home run to Ryan Ludwick. He pitched seven innings, striking out nine while allowing only a run on four hits.

Phillies Place Schneider On DL; Select Lerud from Reading

PHILADELPHIA — The chances of Brian Schnieder returning next year are growing slimmer.

The Phillies placed the 35-year-old backup catcher on the DL today with a strained hamstring. To fill his spot, they called up catcher Steven Lerud from Reading.

Sebastian Valle was in AAA but the Phillies didn’t want to call him up because it was too soon and they didn’t want to deplete Lehigh any further.

Lerud is batting .235 in AA as the backup to Valle and now Tommy Joseph.

With Erik Kratz’s fine season, he will be the top candidate to be the backup catcher next year for Carlos Ruiz.
