Phillies Can’t Climb Out of Early Hole; Drop to Nationals

Nationals 8, Phillies 4

PHILADELPHIA — Three home runs and five runs was just big enough of a lead for Washington to hold off the Phillies.

Tapping Kyle Kendrick early, the Nationals were able to beat Philadelphia, 8-4. Kendrick was done after two innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits and two walks with one strike out.

The Phillies bullpen shut the Nationals down for six innings until a few insurance runs in the 9th inning cut short a comeback attempt by the Phillies..

Phillies Take Second Straight From Nationals

LP – Gio Gonzalez (16-7, 3.28)

PHILADELPHIA — Only twice have the Nationals dropped a series after the All-Star break and twice did it come at the hands of the Phillies.

Playing for pride and the up-hill climb out of the cellar and sub-.500 baseball, the Phillies beat the Nationals for a second straight time to win their second series in a row, a 4-2 win.

The win came at the hands of another brilliant outing by Roy Halladay.

Doc was masterful, holding Washington to only two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out six. He threw 105 pitches, an astounding 86 of them for strikes.

The Phillies got to Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez right away in the 1st inning.
