Prospect Report: Tyson Gillies

OF Tyson Gillies (Yong Kim/Philadelphia Inquirer)

Position: Outfield
Age: 24
Prospect Level: Mid-level prospect
Team:
Lakewood/Clearwater (Single-A)/Reading (Double-A)
2012 Minor League Stats: 75 G, .299 AVG, 14 2B, 8 3B, 4 HR, 24 RBI, .809 OPS

Season in Review: Numbers wise, Tyson Gillies put up a pretty solid season in the minors.

But all of that was wiped out when the troubled outfield prospect again found himself in trouble, this time with the team. While with Reading, Gillies was suspended for shouting at a bus driver.

But despite that, Gillies hit .306 in 68 games with the R-Phils, hitting 13 doubles, eight triples and four homers. Those were his best numbers since being acquired from Seattle in the Cliff Lee trade at the end of 2009.

Next year, Gillies will most like continue with Reading where his strong fielding and solid bat will improve. But it’s Gillies’ maturity that needs to improve if he wants to continue to ascend the farm system and one day play in the outfield at Citizens Bank Park.

2012 Minor League Stats

Season in Review: Maikel Franco wasn’t on a lot of people’s radars this year despite being ranked in the Phillies top 10 prospects list. But the Dominican Republican native made a name for himself in Lakewood and could find himself headed to Clearwater and soon Reading in 2013.

The 20-year-old undrafted free agent of 2010 was twice featured in TTB’s own Chris Bengel’s “Down on the Farm” segment this season, once in April and again in July, for good play. The interesting thing about both those posts was that Franco was batting in the low .200′s.

By July 9, Franco was at a .237, but began a hot tear that continued for the rest of the season. His average shot all the way up to .280 at season’s end, hitting a team-hight 14 home runs and driving in a team high 84 runs through 132 games.\

Position: Starting pitcher
Age: 22
Prospect Level: Mid-level prospect (8th according to BaseballAmerica.com)
Team:
Clearwater (Single-A+)/Reading (Double-A)
2012 Minor League Stats: 30 games (25 starts), 6-10, 5.87 ERA, 138 IP, 109 K.

Season in Review: 22-year-old Brody Colvin had a decent season in the lower levels of the farm system this year.

Colvin started his third professional year of baseball with high-level Single-A Clearwater. In 23 games, 18 of his appearances starts, he posted a 4-5 record with a 4.27 ERA.

Colvin boasts a 94 MPH fastball that naturally sinks. But despite having a scouting report back in 2011 lauding the accuracy and sharpness of his breaking stuff, Colvin struggled with walks in 2012, allowing 4.8 per nine innings.

Position: Starting pitcher
Age: 21
Prospect Level: Top prospect (2nd according to BaseballAmerica.com)
Team:
Clearwater (Single-A+)
2012 Minor League Stats: 26 starts, 10-6, 3.22 ERA, 142.2 IP, 151 K.

Season in Review: Local product and former first round pick Jesse Biddle began his first season at Class A Clearwater with lofty expectations.

Biddle had a very good 2012 season as he had his highest win total in his Phillies career with 10. The Germantown Friends product tossed his first complete game in nearly two years.

The Threshers left-hander tossed seven no-hit innings against Brevard County on Aug. 17. Biddle also struck out 12 batters in that contest.

In 2012, Biddle shaved down his walks total and struck out 27 more batters in only a few more innings than in 2011 with the Lakewood Blue Claws.
