This Sucks: Bastardo Implodes In 8th; Lose 5-0

Mets 5, Phillies 0
WP – Tim Hudson (7-4, 3.56)
LP – Antonio Bastardo (2-3, 5.34)

PHILADELPHIA — The above tweet says it all.

The Phillies of 2012 are finding newer and more awesome ways to lose baseball games. This time, Antonio Bastardo imploded in the 8th inning, walking in the go-ahead run before giving up a grand slam to Brian McCann in the Braves 5-0 win over the Phillies Friday night.

The monumental meltdown overshadowed the return of Ryan Howard, who went 2-for-4 with a single and double in the Phillies loss.

Howard received a chorus of cheers in the 2nd inning. On the second pitch he faced, he took Braves starter Tim Hudson deep to right-center field for a lead-off double. But in 2012 Phillies fashion, Howard was stranded at second.

Along with Howard’s return, Kyle Kendrick’s seven shut out innings were spoiled thanks to the bull pen’s inability to keep the Phillies in the game. Kendrick scattered four hits and a walk through seven, striking out five.

Bastardo entered the 8th inning and the wheels immediately began to fall off. After allowing a single and walk to start off the inning, Bastardo recovered to get the next two batters out.

With two outs, Bastardo walked Chipper Jones to load the bases and then Freddie Freeman to plate the first run of the game. The next hitter was McCann and he hit a grand slam off the left-hander, blowing the game wide open, 5-0.

The Phils had a chance to do some damage in the 8th. But with two men on and two outs, Howard grounded out to second to end the Phillies’ last threat of the game.

To sum up one man’s quote to the beat writers: “This sucks.” Indeed it does.

2B: Howard (1).
